Dental Hygiene and Teeth Whitening

Dental hygiene

Dental hygiene is an extremely important part of modern dentistry. Its importance lies primarily in the prevention of tooth decay, periodontitis (gum disease) and diseases of oral tissues (aesthetics, speech production, food processing), which can be achieved by reducing and limiting the formation of microbial dental plaque.
A regular and systematic regime is of the utmost importance. With the correct dental hygiene, a wide range of complications, such as tooth decay, gingivitis (gum inflammation) and periodontitis, can be easily avoided.

Initial examination

During the initial examination, your dentist or dental hygienist will perform the following:

  • A complex examination which includes:
    • a case history diagnosis,
    • an evaluation of the patient's overall dental health and state of dental hygiene,
    • periodontal examination.
  • Dental plaque removal.
  • Pigmentation removal - using depuration and Air-Flow tooth polishing (according to indication).
  • Oral hygiene instruction – theoretical explanation and practical teeth cleaning practice.

We recommend regular dental hygiene visits twice a year.

Teeth whitening

Teeth whitening is a collection of methods which are used for aesthetic reasons to lighten the tooth enamel.
Teeth whitening procedures are always preceded by a dental examination (it is necessary for the teeth to be cavity free and for the gums to be without inflammation), and, if needed, the removal of dental plaque and pigmentation.

We distinguish between these types of whitening:

  • Clinical whitening.
  • Home whitening.
  • Combined whitening.
  • Inner tooth whitening.

Clinical whitening

Clinical whitening is a procedure performed in a dental clinic, effectively lightening the tooth enamel and returning the teeth to their natural light colour. Clinical whitening includes:

  • A consultation with your dentist.
  • An examination including:
    • a case history diagnosis,
    • an evaluation of the patient's overall dental health and state of dental hygiene,
    • periodontal examination.
  • Photographic documentation before the whitening procedure and after it.
  • The teeth whitening procedure itself.

Home whitening

In the case of home whitening, it is necessary to make individual trays, onto which the whitening gel will then be applied. The patient receives a whitening kit, which contains the individual trays and the whitening gel.

Combined whitening

A combination of the first two methods (clinical and home).

Inner tooth whitening

A method used for whitening strongly coloured teeth (this is usually the case of only one or several teeth).

Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding women, or persons under 18 years of age.
